Just hold down the EDIT button whilst tapping the sample you want to edit, and that will select it without triggering it.
PS: if you want to select multiple samples and edit them all at the same time, hold EDIT down and press all the samples you want to edit. Then you can edit most parameters and do most of the things in TOOLS like normalising, etc all at the same time.
